Aims and objectives
Music Education has a strong presence in the IoE, embracing cutting edge international research, and attracting staff and students from across the Institute. The interests of group-members span psychological, sociological, philosophical, technological and practitioner-based perspectives on music and musical practices within a range of educational and other contexts. The Music Education SIG will:
- facilitate and conduct a programme of research in and relating to music education, including areas such as: special needs; gender; children's musical development; adults' life-long learning in music; learning within formal, non-formal and informal settings; music technology; popular musics, jazz, world musics, traditional musics and classical music; musical meaning; musical identities in relation to globalisation and localisation issues; musical production, distribution and reception across a range of international contexts; instrumental and vocal teaching and learning; classroom pedagogy; music in primary, secondary, tertiary and higher education; community music programmes; the professional development of music teachers, and others;
- advertise our research with a view to continuing to attract funding and research students;
- support the process of writing research proposals and attracting consultancies within music education, seeking funds from national and international sources;
- provide a supportive cross-disciplinary forum in which members can present and discuss their work, including work-in-progress such as PhD research or publications in preparation, and new ideas for research;
- run specialist research seminars for staff and students relating to music education, lead by international scholars.
